[Time-Management] Arise, awake and take charge!

9th April 2010

Life is like a ten-speed bike.  Most of us have gears we never use.

Charles Schultz

We have much more talent than we have displayed. Normally we accept our present performance as our capacity. But deep within us is hidden our true capacity waiting to be exploited. We do not use some of our talents and skill since we are not aware of the same.

One example is lack of assertiveness. Assertiveness is our ability to persist our point of view in spite of resistance from others. We think that we are not capable of being assertive. But when we were children, we were assertive. We never stopped asking repeatedly what we wanted and ultimately succeeded. Next time watch your two year old in action and you will understand what I mean! But over a period of time we stopped being assertive and became either submissive or aggressive. But our natural assertive instinctive is deep inside us.

Another example is our creativity. We were creative when we were young, but gave up as we grew older. Our creative talent is still inside us. Similarly we have various other talents and resources which we never use.

We have to explore ourselves. We need to set aside sometime and search inside us. If we don't use our hidden talent, it will go waste. As I said elsewhere, what is used less will become useless!

The secret of success is consistency of purpose.

Benjamin Disraeli

It is not how many projects we start which is important. What is even more important is the level of our commitment which is reflected by our consistency. Earlier I gave the example of a person hitting a stone ninety-nine times and the stone breaking when he hit the hundredth time. It is not the hundredth hit which broke the stone, but the ninety-nine hits which preceded the hundredth and the last hit!

Sometimes we become too restless to see the result of our activities and we give up at the slightest sign of failure. Impulsively we start some project and our initial enthusiasm wanes after some time. There are also occasions where our resources become inadequate to continue the project or our colleagues withdraw their support.

But the winner is one who does not quit. Leaders do not quit and those who quit cannot be the leaders. I am tempted to quote James Corbett:

Fight one more round. When your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on guard, fight one more round. When your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish your opponent would crack you one on the jaw and put you to sleep, fight one more round – remembering that the man who always fights one more round is never whipped.  -  James Corbett

Over this weekend list the projects you have been pursuing and arrange them age wise. For example I have been jogging for the past ten years, doing yoga for the past eight years; learning piano for the past seven years… etc.

This list is your consistency index!

The tongue is the only tool that gets sharper with use.

Washington Irving

Any tool becomes blunt by usage, not the tongue, and in fact it becomes sharper! I was stunned at the richness of the quotation. Human beings are unique die to our power of expression. We live in the world surrounded by many people and our life does not depend on our efforts only. One of the very critical skill we have to develop is our communication skill.

In order to have our way, we have to communicate with others. Our communication should be sharp and effective. One of the NLP Presupposition is `the purpose of communication is the response you get!'. If we do not get the desired response, then it means that our communication is defective. Next time you watch a TV commercial notice the how powerfully the message is communicated with very little words.

Notice how you can `polish' your communication process. Consider using right words, metaphors, examples, stories, jokes, anecdotes etc. Notice if you are using inflection, which means combining feelings with words. Practice `one minute speech' in which you learn to deliver a powerful message in a minute. Record your speech in a tape and play it back to notice scope for improvement. Log on to the net and down load speeches of powerful speakers. Collect jokes and stories to use in your communication.

Remember: a pot is selected by the sound it makes, and so also a person is evaluated by the sound he makes!

"Nurture your mind with great thoughts,

for you will never go any higher than you think."

 Benjamin Disraeli

We have two systems guiding us in our life. One is our brain and the other is our mind. The chemistry and the biology of the brain are uniform for all of us and we are identical with reference to the way the brain functions. But we are different with reference to our mind and it is the contents of the mind which makes us unique and different. The content of the brain is the same for all of us.

Our brain is a chemical factory and our mind is a thought factory! The brain secretes innumerable number of chemicals and hormones which decides our energy level. But what the brain secretes is controlled by the mind. The brain cannot function on its own without being triggered by a thought process. If our mind recognizes a threat, a specific chemical and hormones are secreted. If the mind recognizes some pleasure, a different set of chemical and hormones are secreted.

This is where the quality of our thoughts is relevant. It is something like the quality of raw materials resulting in a finished product. The finished product will not be any different from the raw material. If our mind is occupied by empowering thoughts, we will be having the required enthusiasm which will give us the requisite energy and stamina. On the other hand if our mind is occupied by unwanted disempowering thoughts, we will feel stuck.

Mind management is like any other resource management. We should manage any resource effectively and efficiently. Our mind should be occupied by productive thoughts.

One way is to start the day with a good quotation. There are websites which can offer such quotations. Like learning a new word a day, you can have a white board and write one good quotation every day.

"Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion."

Jim Roh

Delusion is a false belief or a hallucination. You think it is there but it is not there. Whenever we say that we will do something, knowingly or unknowingly we tell ourselves that we will do it. We also tell others that we will be accomplishing our aim or goal. I have already written about the power of positive affirmation and how it will give us the mental energy and stamina to sustain the planned action plan.

But the most important thing about success is the amount of discipline we bring into our actions. In order to reach our goal, it is not merely dreaming, planning and deciding what to do and what not to do. What is even more important is sticking to the plan of action. Success is a result of systematic application of efforts. The quality of execution is as important as the quality of planning.

When we get up in morning we are given a solid 24 hours. It is entirely upto us to decide what to do with it. Like we budget and account for any other resource like money, we should do it for time also. Because time is an invisible resource, we need to notice where it is going and how we are spending the same.

Log all your activities for one full week and know how you are spending your time and why you are spending that way. Notice how much you work and how much you sleep and check if there is a balance. Check if you are doing justice to your time with reference to your goal. Whatever you your doing, stop for a moment and ask `should I be doing it? Is there anything else I can do instead'?

Don't hallucinate and live with a false hope that you are moving towards your goal if you are not disciplined.

Affirmation without discipline is not only a delusion, it is also a disaster!

[Time-Management] Arise, awake and take charge!

2nd April 2010

"Self-respect is the root of discipline: The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself."

Abraham Joshua Heschel

Saying no to oneself! Think about that as a discipline! I never thought about it so far. In my assertiveness programme I train people how to say no to others' unreasonable demands and protect our time. Now I realise that we should have the discipline to say no to ourselves also.

In our weak moments, we give ourselves certain commands which may not be good to us. Or we may succumb to our mind's commands to lie down in the bed and while away the precious moments in our life. We may listen to our minds temptations to over eat or over drink. Or we may even obey our mind's instructions to over work and deny ourselves the pleasure of rest and family time. So no to that!

Sometime our ego may not allow us to listen to words of wisdom from others and our mind will drive us to take some action in spite of warning from others. Say no that!

Over this weekend, can you do a home work? Write all those things your mind told you to do and you should have said no firmly and think what difference that would have made to the quality of your life!
