[Time-Management] Mind. O My Dear Mind!

10th January 2012

Our mind is already programmed for a predetermined result like a computer and we only run the process. If we don't get the result we want, then we should not blame us! Sounds very different? Do we ever blame our computer? We try to understand why we are not able to get the desired output from the computer. We are able to distinguish between hardware problem and software problem. Before we try to get a result from a computer, we understand this basic principle of computing.

However, when it comes to human behaviour, we are confused. When we fail to get a result, we blame ourselves! We don't seem to appreciate that it is our `mental programme' which has failed. We have to appreciate that we also have hardware problems and `mindware' problems. If we are physically challenged, we are not able to walk, see, hear etc. Sometimes we are also `mentally challenged' when we don't persevere, get irritated, angry and suffer. The remedies for these two types of problems are different and we go to different people to rectify these two problems.

We need both the hardware and the software to succeed. Just because a person is well built and strong, he is not going to be the best boxer. Just because a person has a good voice, he is not going to be a good singer. Just because a person is weak and fragile, he is not going to easily give up. The life of Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa are examples.

This is what the NLP presuppositions teach us. We will have to understand these simple principles and apply in life.

[Time-Management] Mind, O My Dear Mind!

9th January 2012

We have been trying to understand how the mind and the brain work with each other through what are called `NLP presuppositions'. So far we have seen a few of the presuppositions.

In this newsletter we are going to understand yet another interesting presupposition `if what you are doing is not working, do something else, do anything else!'. Sounds very interesting, isn't? The whole concept of NLP is about creating `well formed outcomes' in life. In NLP we talk about a fixed `outcome frame' and a flexible `process frame'. We have to be definite about freezing the outcome we want in our life and we should not compromise on this. Suppose we want to reduce our weight by 3 kilograms in the next six months. This is called the outcome frame. We have to freeze this. That means that no matter what happens, we have to be determined to reach this outcome. The only issue open is how we are going to make it happen. This `how' is called the `process frame'.

Now read the NLP presupposition `if what you are doing is not working, do something else, do anything else'. It makes a meaning? We can have a series of alternative strategies such as jogging, yoga, walking, swimming, dieting etc. if we are not registering weight reduction as planned, then we have to `do something else, anything else!

How are we going to implement this? Keep reading….

It is one thing to `know' a concept and quite another thing to `understand' the same. Understanding comes from application and practice. For example you come to know about the principle of equilibrium. When you apply the principle of equilibrium while riding a bicycle, you understand the same.

The same is true in understanding the principles of NLP.

For example, let us take the NLP presupposition `there is no such thing as failure, only feedback'. I have explained what it means. I also elucidated the same by saying that successful people learn something from each failure.

Let me give an example from my own life. Once I applied for the distributorship of a very popular consumer product, since my family business is distribution. In the interview I made a very attractive presentation about my company and about my background. At the end of the interview I was very sure that I will get the distributorship. But I was disappointed when the company appointed someone else. I failed to get the distributorship.

After many years, when I was learning NLP with NLP Comprehensive, I analysed what feedback I got from this failure. I understood that I oversold myself and the company thought that I was too big for the business!

Can you list three failures in your life and list three feedback and lessons you learnt from each failure?

One other powerful NLP presupposition is `there is no such thing as failure, only feedback'! Very simply worded, this explains the secret of successful people. Successful people do not believe that they have failed; they say that they learn from each failure. Remember what Edison said? He said he did not fail nine hundred odd times, he succeed so many times to find out which filament will not fit into his electric bulb!

NLP is about fixing an `outcome frame' and deciding an appropriate `process frame' which is the strategy. Actually this is how a computer function is understood. We don't say that the computer is bad; we only say that we don't understand how to process the information on the computer.

Long ago I was conducting a training programme in which a participant narrated an interesting story. A very famous consumer company manufacturing hair cream noticed that its cream was being smuggled and consumed in large quantity in a remote South African island. The company wanted to exploit the demand and formally launched the product in that island by hiring a leading cine star. The media advertisement portrayed the cine star taking the hair cream in his fingers and applying on his curly hair.

After this media clipping appeared on the local TV, the sales dipped. The company was surprised on this reversal and conducted a survey to find out why the product `failed'. It came out that the people were using the hair cream like a jam in their bread toast!

Now tell me: did the product launch fail? Isn't it true that the company got a feedback on its poor market intelligence?

The NLP presupposition `people have all the resources' will manifest in terms of our behaviours in a specific context. I am sure you have heard of the popular saying `where there is a will, there is a way'. This is another way of understanding the issue of people having all the resources.

In a school context, I have come across students who are exceedingly good in sports. But when it comes to education, they are very poor. In fact if you analyze, winning in a game of sports calls for hard work, concentration, perseverance, planning, physical and mental discipline, time management and self motivation. These are the very same factors for doing well in education also! If the student can exhibit these qualities in winning a game in sports, the question is why is he not doing so when it comes to education? In other words, he can draw from these resources in sports, but feels bankrupt of these resources when it comes to education!

By doing simple processes, we can bring the resources to the context where it is required. This is a simple mental programming which we will learn later on in this series of newsletter!

I am also equally excited to write on this, but keep reading.

3rd January 2012

Let me explain the NLP presupposition `people have all the resources' through another simple way.

Let us say there are two identical boxes `A' and `B'. In box `A' there are red balls and box `B' has blue balls. If you put your hand in box `A' and take out a ball, it will be obviously a red ball. Even if you do it ten times, you will always get the red ball. If you want to take a blue ball, you have to access box `B'. Isn't it a common sense?

Similarly, we have a `box' of resourceful state and another `box' of un-resourceful state in our mind. If we get into an un-resourceful state of mind, it is up to us to change it by accessing our `box' of resourceful state. The principles of NLP says that it is possible by understanding how to work with our mind to do this without manipulating or forcing our mind.

If you analyse yourself, there will be things which you like and there will be other things which you will not like. For example you may like tomato sauce and you may dislike cheese. If you analyse how your mind experiences the sauce and cheese, there will be a big difference. If you make your mind to experience cheese the same way you experience sauce, you will start liking cheese the same way you like sauce!

There are simple NLP processes to do this! Sounds unbelievable and interesting? Keep reading….

[Time-Management] Mind, O My Dear Mind!

2nd January 2012

`People have all the resources' is a very interesting and important NLP presupposition. If we understand this well, we will be able to put us in a resourceful state of mind whenever we slip into some disappointment mood due to failure.

We need internal resources to reach the outcome we need and one of the most important resources is our mental resource. The most interesting good news is that we have all the mental resources we need, and we should know how to tap into the same.

Let us take a hypothetical case. Assume that you have to reach your home at six in the evening and it is your daughter's birthday function. You leave the office in time, but on the way your vehicle breaks down. What will you do? You will seek the help of some other vehicle. Let us assume that vehicle also breaks down. You will even walk to your house. On the way there is a road block and you cannot even walk. You will take a different route even if it means more distance. After all these interruptions, you will reach your home in time and tell everyone your adventure of reaching home!

Let us now take another case. This time, you are not going home for your daughter's birthday party, but you are going for a dinner which you really don't want to go but forced to accept the dinner invitation. If on the way if you face even fifty percent of the interruption mentioned in the earlier example, what will you do? Obviously most of us will give up!

You have all the resources to reach the destination, but you will exercise your option to persevere or no decided by your mindt! This is what it means by this NLP presupposition.

Interesting? Keep reading….
