[Time-Management] Why NLP, Why Mind Issues?

Why NLP, Why Think and Read About Mind - 2?

I thought I should stress the need for understanding why we behave the way we do. Human beings are sensitive to feelings and we are driven by our feelings. Our feelings are decided by our attitude. Unless and until the attitudes are `formatted', we will not display an external behaviour.

Before I wrote my `100 Exciting Days to Live', I interviewed over five hundred people who displayed all the 100 behaviours that I have discussed in my book. I was quite excited about them and I tried to implement some of them before I wrote them. I did not find it easy. I could do it for a few days, but could not sustain the same for long. I had to put myself in their shoes, think the way they thought, experience what they experienced and `be them'. When I did it, I was able to duplicate their `mental programme'.

I understood, how important is the issue called `experience' and how experience has a structure! That is what the next NLP presupposition: `experience has a structure'! if we understand the meaning of this, we will be able to easy change our habits like the way we change our shirt!

[Time-Management] Why NLP and mind issues?

6th December 2011

Why NLP, Why Think and Read About Mind?

While I am trying to present to you the fantastic subject called the `mind' and its various manifestations and dimensions, I started getting some feedback from the readers. Some tell me that the previous topics were more easy to understand and simple than what I am writing now.

In fact I also felt easy to write the those newsletters.

But, you should know that it is easy to `advice', `tell' and `inform' people what they should do to reach their outcomes in life. But, telling is not doing. Unless and until the mind is influenced and triggered, action will not follow.

For example, go and read the first page of my book `100 Exciting Ways to Live'  where I discussed about the importance of daily discipline. Anyone will agree that it is simple common sense and very easy to implement. But we will not implement. Similarly, we all know that procrastination is a negative energy and we can read books in how to come out of it. But after laying the book down, we will still not do what is to be done on that day!

So, I decided to write on `mind', since we should know how to use mind to our advantage. My fifteen years of intensive training in NLP, has given me the knowhow of how to understand myself and others and mind issues.

Hence this series, `Mind, O, My Dear Mind!'!

[Time-Management] Mind, O, My Dear Mind!

5th December 2011

I am sure you would have thought about the `suspicious' person moving around the airport. Some of you would have thought that he is a terrorist, or a thief lifting other's suitcase, etc. But, the truth is this: that person was myself! I will tell you what happened before this scene I described to you:

I boarded an ATR flight to go to a training event. You many aware that in a small ATR aircraft, you have to check your large suitcase which I did. I misplaced the boarding pass in which the counterfoil of the baggage check in sticker was stuck. I know that after collecting my baggage from the conveyor, I may have to show this to the security if they ask for it. So I decided that I will collect my checked in baggage, remove the baggage tag and walk out and the security may take it as a hand baggage. My conscience was clear since I was not doing anything unlawful. So I wanted a secluded place to remove the tag and carried out my `operation suitcase'! My mind was tense, since I was trying to cover up a mistake. In this state of mind, as I was moving away to the exit gate, I noticed that I had picked up someone else suitcase which resembled mine and had removed the baggage tag! I realised the mistake, went back to the conveyor put the suitcase back on the conveyor and picked up mine, removed the baggage take and then walked out, with a sigh of relief!

Now tell me, are your assumptions about that `suspicious man' true? Supposing, instead of you, the owner of the suitcase had seen what I did, what he would have done? If he had been a police officer how he would have reacted? Will anyone believe my `story'?

Now I am sure will understand the meaning and relevance of the NLP presupposition `the map is not the territory'!

The next NLP presupposition we are going to experience is another exciting one! Experience this anxiety for one more day…..

[Time-Management] Mind, O, My Dear Mind!

2nd December 2011

`The map is not the territory' is an important NLP presupposition. We all know what a map is and what a territory is. If we have the map of a place and try to understand the territory through the map, our understanding may not be 100%. To understand the territory fully, we have to explore the nook and corner of the territory. If we take the map to be the territory, our interpretation of the territory will be as incomplete as our understanding of the map. Sometimes, the territory may change and map might not be updated.

This simple principle is reflected in this NLP presupposition. Our understanding of the world is not the world, it is our interpretation of the world; our understanding of a person is not that person, it is our interpretation of that person.

Here is an incident I want you mentally watch: you are in the visitors' area of an airport to receive someone. You notice a person moving around suspiciously, his eyes looking this side and that side, quite nervous. He goes to the restroom area, looks around, seems to be convinced, and nods his head. He then goes to the baggage conveyor, picks up a red suitcase, quickly rushes to the restroom area, looks around to ensure that no one is observing him and removes the baggage tag. He then walks out through the exit gate quite nervously.

Now, think about what you saw, and write what you think about that person!

Wait till my next newsletter and I'll tell you more about this man!

[Time-Management] Mind, O, My Dear Mind!

`The Map is Not the Territory'

Before I write anything, I want to say something very important. I am trying my best to present NLP in such a way that you understand the basic principles and apply the same in your daily life. If you want to do it sincerely, you have to do the various exercises with full involvement. If you don't follow this, you will not be able to integrate the various concepts. If you are not in a position to do the exercises, stop reading this page and resume at a convenient time.

In order to understand this NLP presupposition, do an exercise. Close your eyes for a few minutes and honestly believe what I am going to ask you to believe: `everyone around you is dangerous; the world is a dangerous place; people are just waiting to destroy you; people are not trustworthy; people are cunning'.

With this mindset, open your eyes and meet the people around you, talk to them, move with them, while at the same time noticing how your mind `perceives' them.

After sometime, return to your seat, and again close your eyes, but this time believe that: all the people around you are good; they are your very good friends; they really want to help you and are fully trustworthy; they are helpful'.

With this mindset, open your eyes and go and meet the same people and notice how your mind perceives them now .

If you had done this exercise sincerely, you will have experienced some weird feeling.

Why is it so? Wait for the meaning of the above NLP presupposition and I am going to narrate an incident….

[Time-Management] Mind. O, My Dear Mind!

30th November 2011

NLP Presuppositions are assumptions on how the mind directs our thought process and how our thought process decides what we do and how do it. We are not slaves of our fate, but we are slaves of our mind! We need to become the master of our mind. For doing this, we should understand what NLP presuppositions are.

Let me explain this by an exercise. Stop reading this and look around and notice every object which is red in colour. Notice every object which is red. Then start noticing every object which is green in colour. Then start noticing every object which is blue in colour.

Have you done it? If you have, you would have noticed that when your mind was directed to notice only objects which are red in colour,  objects of any other colour would not have attracted you!  If you did not do this exercise, stop reading this and please do it so that you can experience what I have said here.

The reason is, once we have asked the mind to focus on one particular thing, the mind just obeys like a sincere servant.

In the next piece I am going to discuss the most important of all presuppositions `The map is not the territory'.

Getting restless to know what this maps and territory is about? Keep reading….
