[Time-Management] Ignited Child!

7th October 2010

Children already have all the resources they need.

Somewhere I read that the founder of Nike believed that everyone who walks this planet is an athlete. I was listening to Robin Sharma, one of the world's best motivation speakers. He says if you breathe oxygen, you are a leader! In the same line of thinking, I tell every parent in my Parents' Education parent that every child is a special child and a gift of God. Every child is born with some intelligence and the only role of the parent is to discover the hidden potential.

As I mentioned elsewhere, every child is identical with reference to the brain content and its function. As long as the brain is not damaged, its function is identical across the human race.

It has been my experience, and I'm sure, many will agree, that if a child is weak in one area, he is very strong in some other area. Talk to the child who claims that he has very poor memory and notice how many cricketers' name he remembers very accurately! Notice the child with least concentration in the classroom, and observe his concentration in his favourite sports. The most short tempered boy will have some very close friends with whom he will never lose his temper. The dullest boy in the class will be very active in the sports ground.

This NLP presupposition gives a basic confidence that every child can come up in life, no matter what handicap he may have.

[Time-Management] 'Ignited Child'

6th October 2010

`The mind and body are part of the same system'.

Next time you go to a school how the children run when the school bell goes in the evening. They cannot wait. They will run like a bullet train! See them when they come to the class the next day, and you will see their energy level! This NLP presupposition explains why and where we display our full talent. All of us have talent, but mere talent is not going to produce the result. Our mind should be sold that we should bring out our best.

Next time when you see your child is doing his homework in a subject which he loves most, observe his body posture and involvement. Also notice the same when he does the homework in a subject which he does not like. You will notice a difference.

Also do one more thing. Take two class work notebooks of your son, one subject which he likes most and another which he does not like at all. Notice the quality of the handwriting, the thickness of the letters, the spelling mistakes, etc. Also notice the difference in the upkeep of the notebook. You will find some difference.

Also notice the facial expression of the students in the classroom of a teacher who is pleasant and wears a smile in the face. Next go to the class of a teacher who is grim and conveys a serious look and notice the facial expression of the students.

Teachers should remember that teaching and learning are two different things. Teaching is what the teacher does, and learning is how the students respond to what is taught mentally. Hearing is also different from listening. While hearing is a brain driven function, listening is a mind assisted process. The students may be physically present but mentally absent.

NLP has a variety of techniques and processes to integrate the mind and the body which we will be seeing as  we go on this newletters.

[Time-Management] Arise, awake and take charge!

6th October 2010

Every man has three characters: that which he shows, that which he has, and that which he thinks he has.

Alphonse Karr

We are a complex entity! We are not always what we think we are; we are not what others think we are; sometimes what we present to the outside world need not be who we are really. You may not agree with me, but do a simple exercise: write down ten words to describe who you are, like helping, considerate, short tempered, jovial etc. Then meet some of your very close friends and ask them to make a similar list about yourself. Compare the entries in your list with that of others. You will be surprised about the contents.

We care for the opinions of others and sometimes we may not like to reveal our true self to for the fear of spoiling our social image. The same is true with respect to our friends. They may not give us the true feedback about ourselves for the fear of losing our friendship. We may not take the feedback from others as true and we may dispute, disagree or even debate.

The other day I was watching the conversation between a boss and his deputy. The boss wanted to know what the deputy thought about him and asked his deputy about his drawbacks. The deputy said, `sir, sometimes you are short tempered'. The boss said no, I'm not'. The deputy reiterated his opinion. The boss' face became red and shouted `I told you I am not short tempered, and how many times I have to tell this? You better stop commenting on me… else…'!

Well, this conversation explains the above quotation!

[Time-Management] Ignited Chiled!

`When one child can do something, any child can learn to do the same thing'

The whole concept of NLP is about duplicating human excellence. For everything you want to do, there has always been someone who has done it. The key word in this presupposition is `learn'. Our willingness to learn the success strategy from those who have succeeded is very important.

Duplicating human excellence is difference from duplicating the behaviour of a person. Merely duplicating behaviour may yield a very limited outcome, but the result will not be consistent.

Children should be encouraged to read the biographies of legends and made to believe that they can also repeat the same performance. Have you heard the story of a boy who met John F Kennedy in the White House? The boy was asked what was his dream and the boy replied that he wanted to become the President of United States and that boy was no other than Bill Clinton in his school days!

As applied to a classroom situation, the teachers could discuss the success strategy of an excellent performer and make it a case study for other children to emulate. In fact the whole concept of NLP came with the simple idea that excellence can be duplicated. If you take business management programmes, case studies of excellent organisations are discussed threadbare so that the same can be duplicated. When the Japanese succeeded with quality circles and customer delight programmes, all the organisations duplicated the Japanese practices.

It will be a good idea for the teachers to discuss the reading practices of excellent students. A student with the best handwriting can be taken and the students can discuss what did he do to improve his handwriting so well.

[Time-Management] Arise, awake and take charge!

5th October 2010

Never again clutter your days or nights with so many menial and unimportant things that you have no time to accept a real challenge when it comes along. This applies to play as well as work. A day merely survived is no cause for celebration. You are not here to fritter away your precious hours when you have the ability to accomplish so much by making a slight change in your routine. No more busy work. No more hiding from success. Leave time, leave space, to grow. Now. Now! Not tomorrow!
Og Mandino

When it comes to work, sometimes not doing any work is the best work you can engage in! Let's compare the way we spend our money. Just because we have money, we don't just like that spend it on things which we don't need. We would rather not spend any money than spending the same on useless things. We are intelligent enough to list two sets of things, one useful and the other useless. But do we use our discretion to identify useful activity and useless activity? Most successful people are good at it.

One of the most critical skills to accomplish great things in life is our ability to say `no' to unnecessary demands on our time. The arithmetic is very clear. If available time is dissipated, you will be left with zero balance. It is simple common sense of addition and subtraction.

Whenever we find it difficult to manage our expenditure with the available income, don't we sit and analyse which things we need not have bought and where we wasted money? The same is even more relevant for managing our time. You can earn more money by working more hours. But you cannot get more time when the available time is spent.

Practice saying `no', but do it tactfully without losing relationship. Be gracious with people, but ruthless with time. Don't be ruthless with people while unreasonable demands are made on your time.

[Time-Management] Ignited Child!

4th October 2010

`Experience has a structure'

We act in a particular way based on our thoughts and experiences. If our experiences are pleasant, we behave in a particular way. If our experiences are unpleasant, we behave in another way. There are two basic instincts which drive us into action. One is pain and the other is pleasure. When we go through a pleasurable experience the connected action is reinforced. On the other hand when we experience pain, the connected action is not reinforced. We call it the positive and negative reinforcements. The mind and body are part of the same system and we cannot bring about a body discipline without the accepting the same.

This presupposition is very relevant in a teaching and learning context. The process of learning should be a pleasant experience. You are aware that some children dislike a particular subject, and hence dislike the teacher teaching that subject?  Similarly, a student does not like a teacher, and hence develops hatred towards the subject she teaches!

If the negatives feelings are not neutralized, the behaviours will not change. In order to replace the old behaviour, we have to replace the feeling associated with the concerned behaviour.

Here's an example I am not tired of quoting. A child who joined the second standard was avoiding the computer class from the day one of her school. Any amount of counseling could not help. The child was normal in all other classes, but when it comes to computer lab, she will run away. Over a period of time the child started malingering sickness.

The case was referred to me and I took several days to understand the reason for this negative attitude towards computer. The child told me that she was afraid of `mouse'! on a detailed enquiry, I came to know that when the child was two years old, she was bitten by a mouse! When I explained to the child that the computer mouse had nothing to do with the household mouse and neutralized all her old negative experience, the child became normal to the world of computers!

[Time-Management] Arise, awake and take charge!

`My success was not based so much on any great intelligence but on great

common sense'

Helen Gurley Brown

Helen Gurley was a great writer. She started her life in a humble family. In 1962 when she was 40 she authored the bestselling book Sex and the Single Girl. In 1965 she became the editor-in-charge of the Cosmopolitan and reversed the fortunes of the falling magazine. In September 2008, she was named the 13th most powerful American over the age of 80 by State magazine. I give this information from Wikipedia.

I was thinking about this quotation and I am struck by the deep meaning and practicality of this quotation. Intelligence and success are two different things. They are not interdependent on each other. If you are intelligent, the probability of your success may be high, but intelligence does not guarantee success.

If In were to choose, I will choose with a man with common sense than a highly intelligent man without common sense! Just think:

·         Isn't common sense that we should work hard to succeed? But do all work hard?

·         Isn't common sense that tobacco can cause cancer? But then we do we smoke?

·         Isn't common sense that we should take care of our health? But then why don't we eat right?

·         Isn't common sense that we should spend time to enhance our knowledge? But then why don't we read every day?

·         Isn't common sense that the television channel that we watch everyday does not add value to the quality of our life? But then why don't we switch it off?

·         Isn't common sense that we should be focused and not waste our time? But then why do we dissipate our time on non value adding activities?

Over this weekend, perhaps you can audit your various actions and check if it makes commonsense to indulge in them anymore!
