No repair, only replacement!
Most people...find a disorientating mismatch between the long-term nature of their liabilities and the increasingly short-term nature of their assets.
The other day I had to take my three year old video camera for servicing since the camera is malfunctioning. After examining the same, the service engineer said that it is cheaper to replace the camera than to repair the same since the manufacturer had stopped producing that model! I was thinking about it and relating to the issue of manpower deployment in organizations. With sweeping technological changes in organizations, there is an imminent need to update our skill set and continue to remain as a resource to the organization. We need to constantly revisit our skill and suitability to the present context of the organization. Else, we will not be required by the organization.
With more and more educational institutions coming up offering latest courses, unless we are having the latest skill and education, we will be replaced by those who meet the current organizational requirement. If there is a gap between what we are capable of delivering and what the organization needs, we will be replaced by those who are better than us. I other words, there will be not repair, but only replacement! Instead of spending time and efforts to train us with new skills, it is easier for the organizations to replace us with better human resources. This situation is more so if there is attitude and ego problem in us.
We need to understand that it is an era of the survival of the fittest. We will be rendered surplus by those who are more efficient than us. We need to conduct a self audit of our worth by asking the following questions:
- What are my skills at this point of time?
- Are they relevant to the needs of the organization?
- If for any reason if I leave the organization, will there be a cheaper and more qualitative replacement?
- How am I going to present myself as a more valuable human resource to my organization?
- Am I an asset to the company or a liability?
Answer these questions frankly and candidly and notice a shift in your attitude to your organization!
