In the practical use of our intellect, forgetting is as important as
remembering.
William James
Just imagine if we remember everything! Just imagine there is a computer which cannot delete any file? Life will be horrible if we remember everything and cannot forget anything. If you think for a few minutes, every day we try to remember something and we also try to forget something. We should be able to do both as we like it. Poor memory is a handicap and will affect our progress. So is poor ability to forget!
As we live our life, we come across people who help us and we also come across people who harm us. We pass through happy moments in life. We also pass through sad moments in life. We should remember good things and people who helped us. At the same time we should be able to forget people who harmed us. We should also be able to forget bad experiences and sad events. Suppose we want to forget bad things, but cannot forget? It is something like a file which we don't want in our computer. If it is a harmless file, perhaps we can carry it in our computer as long as it does not occupy too much of space. If it happens to be a virus, will it not destroy all the good and useful files? This principle applies to our ability to forget bad memories also!
Do a self audit: how good are you in forgetting as much as you can remember?
