King C. Gillette lost his family home in the Chicago Fire of 1871 and became a travelling salesman to earn his living. He wanted to invent some new innovative product which will be purchased over and over again by satisfied customers.
One day while having his shave he got an idea of an entirely new, safe, inexpensive disposable blade which will be used every day. Technical people told him that it would be impossible to produce steel so hard, thin and sharp, and even if it was made, it will be too expensive and hence commercially not viable!
But he persevered for six years and started his Gillette Safety Razor Company in 1903. In1904 King C. Gillette got a patent to make safety razor. In the first year the company sold 51 razors and 168 blades! In the following year 90,884 razors and 123,648 blades were sold!
His first breakthrough came during the First World War when the US Government issued Gillette safety razor to the entire army forces. During this period 3.5 million razors and 32 million blades were purchased by the US Army!
