âGood leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior peopleâ
John D Rockefeller
Are you a leader? Can you build an effective team? Can you develop people? You will be assessed and evaluated on all these traits when you are not there and your people manage the show in your absence!
The higher up you go in your career; you need more of people management skills than of technical skills. Developing people to be independent of supervision is very important for a leader.
Check if the following is true:
- A class teacher is best judged when her students behave well when she is not around
- A parent is best judged when the children behave well when they are not around.
- A commander is best judged when the soldiers fight the battle when he is not around.
During the three decades of my experience as the head of Human Resources Department, I have seen many people grow into very senior executive positions. In all of them I noticed one common denominator: all of them developed their people to be independent. Since they developed this quality in their people, they also developed to shoulder higher responsibility!
Here is a self check for you: how do your people work when you are not supervising them?
