`The family unit plays a critical role in our society and in the training of the generation to come.
Abraham Lincoln
I was thinking about bringing up children with values. As our children grow up in life they receive various inputs from various places education from schools and colleges, job and career from organisations, health from the medical profession etc. But the only place where our children can receive good values is from their homes. If there is a major parental responsibility, it is this portfolio.
These days organisations have a mission statement and they attract customers by projecting how they live up to that. Likewise every family should decide on certain basic values for them.
Examples could be:
· Austerity: we will not spend money unnecessarily
· We will respect elders
· We will treat everyone with dignity and honour
· We will never lie and be truthful
The list can be enriched and contextualized. Every family can have their own list depending on their family heritage. From the formative years the parents should talk about it in the presence of their children and demonstrate their commitment to these principles by living by these principles.
A child reared in such a family will be a value driven child and this is the best form of social service a parent can do!
