`It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men'
Frederick Douglass
After reading my newsletter on family values, one reader wrote to me: `thanks sir. Fantastic message. My daughter is studying in 8th standard in
school. Whenever I talk about discipline, respect, positive attitude she is not willing to listen. Please advise me how to make her understand'.
Disciplining children is just another skill which we have to learn. Like we learnt to walk, to communicate, to ride a bicycle, etc. we should learn this also. Being a mother or a father means we are leading a family and not merely managing a family. While a manager controls and gets discipline among the members using force and authority, a leader aligns the members by effectively communicating with them.
Just recall how our mothers modified our behaviours from time to time! We never wanted to eat, she made us to eat; we never wanted to go to school, she made us to go to school. The list can be unending.
`Parenting' is a very important skill to be learnt. Our children are growing up in a charged environment and they may not be as disciplined as we were when we were young. We have to understand this reality and prepare ourselves to discharge our function more effectively!
